{"id":9,"date":"2023-10-06T08:39:39","date_gmt":"2023-10-06T08:39:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/new.hostitsmart.com\/manage\/knowledgebase\/?p=9"},"modified":"2023-10-06T12:27:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-06T12:27:35","slug":"How-to-Protect-or-Lock-a-Domain-Name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.hostitsmart.com\/manage\/knowledgebase\/9\/How-to-Protect-or-Lock-a-Domain-Name.html","title":{"rendered":"How to Protect or Lock a Domain Name?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"kb-article-content\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You can keep your domain name safe from all sorts of illegal domain name transfers with the help of a feature called <strong>Domain Theft Protection. <\/strong>When Theft Protection feature is enabled for a given domain name, any request pertaining to transfer of that domain name to any other registrar fails at the Registry level itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">The above feature is, unfortunately, <em>not <\/em>offered for the below mentioned TLDs (extensions):<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Because of restrictions obligated by the Registry:<\/span>If, for some reason, you need to transfer your domain name away from HostITSmart, you would have to disable the Theft Protection feature as the first thing, and only after that you would be able to place the Transfer request.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>.NZ<\/li>\n<li>.DE&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>.UK<\/li>\n<li>.EU<\/li>\n<li>.AU<\/li>\n<li>.ES<\/li>\n<li>.RU\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Because of other restrictions:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>.WEB.IN<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">One would be able to see the Theft Protection status of a given domain name under the <strong>Order Information&nbsp;<\/strong>view, provided the Theft Protection service is available for that domain name. The Theft Protection status is visible as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Enabled (Green coloured circle)<\/span>: this indicates that Theft Protection service for your domain name has been enabled, and any requests for transfer of domain name will fail.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Disabled (Grey coloured circle):<\/span> this indicates that Theft Protection is disabled and you can successfully transfer your domain name to any other registrar of your choice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>For Customers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Enabling\/Disabling Theft Protection for a Domain Name<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You would need to follow the following steps in order to Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature for a given domain name:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Access the <strong>Control Panel <\/strong><strong>after logging in.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">From the list that is provided, pick the domain name for which you wish to enable or disable the Theft Protection feature. After this, you can move on to the <strong>Order Information <\/strong>view.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Click on the link that says <strong>Theft Protection.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In order to enable the Theft Protection: <\/span>Click on <strong>Enable <\/strong>button.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In order to disable the Theft Protection:<\/span> Click on <strong>Disable <\/strong>button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">When you are done, click on the <strong>Update Theft Protection Status.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Attention<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">If your domain name is Suspended or Locked at registry, and is not under our system, you are going to encounter the following error message when you try to Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><em>Domain Status does not allow this operation.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You are advised to contact HostITSmart Support Team in such case at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostitsmart.com\/support\">https:\/\/www.hostitsmart.com\/support\/<\/a> to know why your domain name is Locked or Suspended and how can you have the Lock or Suspension removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>For Resellers<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Enabling\/Disabling Theft Protection for a Domain Name<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You would need to follow the following steps in order to Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature for a given domain name:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Access the <strong>Reseller <strong>Control Panel <\/strong><\/strong><strong>after logging in.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">From the list that is provided, pick the domain name for which you wish to enable or disable the Theft Protection feature. After this, you can move on to the <strong>Order Information <\/strong>view.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Click on the link that says <strong>Theft Protection.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In order to enable the Theft Protection: <\/span>Click on <strong>Enable <\/strong>button.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In order to disable the Theft Protection:<\/span> Click on <strong>Disable <\/strong>button.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">When you are done, click on the <strong>Update Theft Protection Status<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Anyone in the Reseller chain is authorized to Enable or Disable the <strong>Theft Protection <\/strong>feature.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Suppose a customer, who is under your Sub-Reseller, registers a new domain name, and by default, the Theft Protection feature gets enabled. Now, whether it is that Customer, the Sub-Reseller or you, anyone can disable this feature.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Regardless of who disabled this service, you, your Sub-Reseller or the Customer, anyone can re-enable it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Again, regardless of who enabled this service, you, your Sub-Reseller or the Customer, anyone can disable it.Anyone, in the entire Reseller chain, is allowed to Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature, even if the domain name happens to be Locked\/Suspended.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Suppose, you have locked a domain name. Now you, your Sub-Reseller or the Customer, anyone can Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature for this domain name.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Suppose your Sub-Reseller has locked a domain name. In this case also, anyone (you, the Customer or the Sub-Reseller himself) can Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature for that particular domain name.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Attention<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">If your domain name is Suspended or Locked at registry, and is not under our system, you are going to encounter the following error message when you try to Enable\/Disable the Theft Protection feature:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><em>Domain Status does not allow this operation.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You are advised to contact HostITSmart Support Team in such case at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hostitsmart.com\/support\">https:\/\/www.hostitsmart.com\/support\/<\/a> to know why your domain name is Locked or Suspended and how can you have the Lock or Suspension removed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Locking\/Unlocking the Domain Name<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">You are also allowed to place a <strong>Lock <\/strong>on a domain name besides enabling Theft Protection for it. This action would have following effects:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">When a lock is applied to a domain name, all actions normally allowed for a domain name can still be performed by <em>only <\/em>HostITSmart or you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Different actions that can be performed from <strong>Order Information<\/strong> view:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Modification of <strong>Name Servers<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Modification of <strong>Contact Details<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Modification of <strong>Child Name Servers<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Suspension\/Unsuspension<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Transfer\/Move\/Push <\/strong>to other Customer Account<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Theft Protection, <\/strong>etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">If one tries to place a <strong>Transfer (Away) Request <\/strong>for a locked domain name to some other Registrar, it would not be allowed and the request will fail at the<strong> Registry <\/strong>level itself. (Theft Protection also supports this feature).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Domain names with the following extensions can be transferred even when Locked:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">.RU<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">.AU<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">The recommendation is to Lock a domain name only if you have a <em>payment-related <\/em>problems with your customers <em>or<\/em> if you are the only person using it. Otherwise, it is enough to enable the Theft Protection feature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\"><strong>Note<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">The Lock feature is, unfortunately, <em>not <\/em>offered for the below mentioned TLDs (extensions):<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Because of restrictions obligated by the Registry:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>.NZ<\/li>\n<li>.DE<\/li>\n<li>.UK<\/li>\n<li>.EU<\/li>\n<li>.ES\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Because of other restrictions:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>.WEB.IN<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Given below are the differences between Domain Locking and Theft Protection:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>If you locked a domain name, it is <em>only<\/em> <strong>HostITSmart<\/strong> or you who can unlock it.<\/li>\n<li>You are not allowed to Unlock a domain name that may have been locked by <strong>HostITSmart<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under no circumstances is a Customer allowed to Unlock a locked domain name.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">How to Lock\/Unlock a Domain Name<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">Access the <strong>Reseller <strong>Control Panel <\/strong><\/strong><strong>after logging in.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva; font-size: x-small;\">From the list that is provided, pick the domain name which you wish to Lock\/Unlock.
